Gaining Weight With Raw Food
In general raw eaters talk about raw foods and how they possibly bring on fat loss. But, there are actually some men and women in an opposing situation. These people need/want to gain pounds however they would prefer to eat vegan foods and achieve healthy weight gain.
Below is a true story regarding my previously slim brother and how he was able to gain pounds eating mostly smoothies with greens. My brother is a 30-something, primarily raw vegan. He mostly consumes green smoothies out of perhaps laziness, but also for all of the reported health benefits that can be achieved.
Upon consuming mostly green smoothies for a couple of months he became inspired and energized to get back to weight lifting with a goal to perhaps achieve muscle pounds. He tried weight lifting before to try and put on muscle and boost his self esteem. This time around he decided to things much more seriously, so he advance paid for an annual membership in hopes to stay committed, and he also hired a fitness trainer.
After several weeks of the fitness instructor dogging him about his vegan diet and strongly suggesting that he consume heavy animal protein and sugary snacks that take a longer time to digest, in order to achieve the desired pounds, he got rid of his personal trainer and continued to workout by himself, and started hunting for a diet plan, to gain weight, that he was happy with.
He came across information about figs, a calorie dense healthy fruit that tasted great in smoothies, and for some raw fooders, considered the healthiest choice of all calorie rich foods. He soaked a package of figs in water in the refrigerator each evening (simpler to digest after being soaked) and during each day would include several in every green smoothie, and finally included the fig water in the final green smoothie of the day. He kept this up and began to gain some pounds! Although he was happy with the increased weight, he wanted to put on more weight, but by adding other foods than just figs.
He then looked into some healthy fatty fish (keep in mind, he isn’t 100% raw vegan, just mostly) and decided that good choices were sardines, as well as anchovies. He actually likes the taste of both types so he started eating a few cans each week, just eating them right from the can.
He also began including raw chemical free nut butters, like raw peanut butter or/and raw almond butter, to his green smoothies. He began to see more pounds being added from this additional dosage of calories. To get extra protein into his diet, he included either hemp hearts or bee pollen to the green smoothies.
As an additional nutrient boost, not for weight gain but for powerful minerals he often added a few pieces of dulse seaweed to the green smoothies.
There we have it. A few extra additions to green smoothies and possibly even some fatty fish included in the diet, he managed to put on weight in a exponentially healthier way than heading through the Burger King drive thru. Hopefully this method could work for you too if healthier weight gain is what you are looking to achieve.
